When ever the Alien is in Proximity, or you are spoted, or suspected to be in the Alien`s hunting Circle(basiclly when he/it makes that terrefying hissing sound) you can start recording to highlight the encounters, same could go for Humans and Working Joes, exept they don`t hiss, they talk.
